FightNight 2009 Recap
Another FightNight has come and gone, raising millions for DC’s underprivileged children and providing a venue for DC’s culture set to see and be seen. The night opened up with a VIP
reception for the myriad boxing legends in attendance, including “Sugar” Ray Leonard, “Smokin’” Joe Frazier, Gerry Cooney, “Buster” Douglas, and “the Bronx Bull” Jake LaMotta. Also notable: ESPN and the Washington Post’s Michael Wilbon and Channel 4′s Lindsay Czarniak.
After a silent auction of sports memorabilia, the crowd moved into the ballroom for cigars and dinner. As the plates were cleared away, the entertainment started, beginning with a brief but rousing set by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, including their hits “Bad Reputation,” “I love Rock ‘n Roll,” and “I Hate Myself for Loving You.”
After their set, the drums, guitars, and amps were quickly cleared away to make room for the Washington Redskins’ Cheerleaders to put on a short dance number.
Once the entertainment was finished, world-famous boxing announcer Michael Buffer (“let’s get ready to rumble!”) announced all the boxing legends in attendance and brought them up on stage while Joe Robert and his son, Joe Robert III, thanked the people who made Fight Night possible. Live auction items included a flag flown over Helmand Province, Afghanistan, which sold for $62,500, a custom motorcycle that sold for over $60,000, and a recording session with Stevie Wonder. Then, of course, came the fights. Truly, an evening to remember.
