China Claims to be Biggest Victim of Cyber Attacks

The past few weeks have seen a number of large scale cyber attacks, including attacks emanating from China which targeted Internet search giant Google. China has now entered the fray, not only deflecting charges that the Chinese hacked government offices in India, but also claiming to be the biggest victim of cyber attacks.

Foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu, citing the recent hack of Chinese search giant Bandu, said “China is the biggest victim of hacking attacks.” Ma claims that Chinese companies are consistently under cyber attack.

The claims come in the wake of the attacks against Google, who has threatened to pull out of the Chinese market, claiming that the hackers were based in China, a charge that Ma says is baseless.

The Chinese have a well developed cyber capability and have stood up ‘cyber militia’ units. The Chinese government regularly utilizes these resources to conduct espionage against foreign targets.
