Martha Johnson on GSA’s Transformation
The IRMCO (Interagency Resources Management Conference) conference is a special annual event for government managers and leaders. GSA Administrator Martha Johnson said, “it’s among the rare opportunities we have to be together in one place, to share, to discuss, to debate, and to solve problems” during her keynote address on April 11, 2010.
Yesterday, ExecutiveGov had the opportunity to chat with Johnson about the recently revealed new mission statement of GSA and some of the priorities of this year’s IRMCO conference. After only two months in office, Johnson has seen healthcare reform, open government directive plans revealed, and more specifically to GSA – a transformation.
GSA’s new mission statement is: To use expertise to provide innovative solutions for our customers in support of their missions and by doing so foster an effective, sustainable, ad transparent government for the American people. Johnson declared, “GSA is deliberately casting itself as the government’s change agent.”
She told ExecutiveGov, “There are a couple of key pieces of the new mission statement. The first is that we are using our expertise, that’s a particularly important angle of it; we are using our expertise to embed ourselves in our client agencies because our mission is that their mission succeeds. And we are doing that by helping them with innovative solutions that are particularly sensitive to sustainability, transparency, efficiency and effectiveness.”
The IRMCO conference will run through Wednesday, April 14, 2010 and there are over 200 senior government executives participating and collaborating. Johnson explained how the conference is “a time for us to deepen our bonds with the other agencies and to be a change agent driving these initiatives and demonstrating our innovative mindsets so that we can take them forward even more rapidly and effectively.”
