Elie Kahn, senior vice president of ASM Research’s Health Solutions Group Business Unit, has a passion about serving people. With her ascension to the role of senior vice president, Kahn is more determined than ever to ensure her customers receive the best healthcare support her company can offer. GovCon Executive sat down with Kahn to discuss her role and what drives her.
GovCon Executive: Could you tell us a little about your background?
Elie Kahn: I started with a very technical background in the industry. I worked as a programmer for many years with a focus on systems work, which I developed a deep passion for, understanding actually how things work from the inside. And I ended up in a focused professional area, which was healthcare. And 20 plus years later, I’m still working in the healthcare environment, and have since moved my career track from a technical track to a management and leadership environment.
GovCon Executive: What are some challenges you face in your current role, and how do you overcome those?
Elie Kahn: Well, frankly, I have some sort of challenge every day. I face customer issues, employee issues, the continuing resolution, government cutbacks, things of that nature. So, everyday, I’m faced with a challenge, which kind of keeps me excited and stimulated in my position. I try hard to face the challenges that are people specific; customers, employees, or partners. Things that I can influence and work through by looking at the issue from the other person’s perspective, because in the end, it’s all about working with people. So, I try and understand from their perspective the challenges that they see and the issues they see and then try and work towards a mutual solution.
GovCon Executive: What are some goals that you’re hoping to lead ASM to in 2011?
Elie Kahn: My team is very committed to service members, veterans and their families. We have a 30-plus year history of working in this space. Most of my team comes out of the military and, therefore, today they’re veterans. What I want to do is add more value in the EHR and the way ahead in the electronic health record space. It’s a passion of mine, and I want to see a successful national initiative that adds to access of care, increases quality of care, decreases patient issues, increases patient safety and things of that nature.
GovCon Executive: On more of a personal note, what’s the best piece of advice professionally you’ve ever received?
Elie Kahn: I have to say the best piece of advice I ever got was a long time ago. The advice was always be honest, and I believe I stay true to that. And, frankly, as we age, it’s easier to always remember the truth than anything else. So, always be honest.
GovCon Executive: Do you have any hobbies you enjoy in your spare time?
Elie Kahn:– I’m a frequent traveler and travel is one of my most enjoyed hobbies. I love my e-reader. I’m an avid reader. I am a gardener and I’m a nature lover. One of my goals in life is to visit all the national parks in the United States.
GovCon Executive: What was the best destination you traveled to?
Elie Kahn: Our most outrageous recent vacation was on an African safari, which I would do again in a minute!
