Northrop Grumman Corp. has won an award from an organization representing emerging contractors for its support for small businesses, the company announced Friday.

The company’s information systems sector received the Small Business Partner of the Year Award from the Small and Emerging Contractors Advisory Forum.

According to the release, awardees support mentor-protege relationships, teaming, partnerships and other programs for working with small and emerging contractors.

Small businesses help the sector grow, said Cynthia Hyland, vice president of contracts, pricing and supply chain for the information systems sector.

Small firms account for nearly half of all of the sector’s subcontracting activities, according to the company.

ITT Exelis received an award from the Small Business Administration for supporting research and development activities and Mike Wilson, president for information systems, accepted the award on the company’s behalf.
