He is directly accountable for leading all global human resource activities in support of the business which includes driving the overall talent strategy; workforce planning, talent sourcing, and recruiting; maximizing organizational effectiveness and employee engagement; improving leadership quality; aligning compensation and benefit programs to overall business imperatives; as well as ensuring timely and effective implementation of HR initiatives, programs, and systems.
Most recently, Gary served as Vice President, Global Talent Management for Avaya. In this role, Gary was accountable for the design and execution of global culture change and leadership initiatives to drive organizational capability, agility, and high performance. Gary came to Avaya as part of Avaya’s 2009 acquisition of Nortel’s Enterprise Solutions business, a transaction in which he was intimately involved.
Gary was Vice President of Human Resources for Nortel’s Enterprise Solutions business and also led Nortel’s HR function in support of the Americas region. He was recruited to Nortel’s Human Resource Leadership Development Program in 1996 and has held a rich variety of business-facing and corporate HR roles which have taken him to five locations on two continents, including an international expat assignment based in Singapore.
Gary has a Masters degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University, attended the London School of Economics and Political Science for post-graduate business studies coursework as a recipient of a prestigious Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarship, and has a Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Economy from Michigan State University. He lives in Durham, North Carolina with his wife Mara and two young children.
