Inmarsat and Cisco Systems will create an alliance enabling Inmarsat to deliver advanced services over its new high-throughput satellite broadband network, Global Xpress.

Under the agreement, Cisco will provide an advanced satellite applications service delivery platform and a high performance access network for Inmarsat’s GX program, the first global Ka-band network with mobile connectivity.
“These agreements will allow Cisco and Inmarsat to create new value propositions for our customers,” said Rupert Pearce, chief executive officer of Inmarsat’s performance access network.
Cisco will also develop a router for satellite network end-users that will utilize Inmarsat GX capabilities and the BGAN global network.
“Imagine watching on demand TV in an aircraft, using TelePresence on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean, or accessing cost effective HD TV broadcasting from any location. We are truly excited about the possibilities this unique alliance creates,” said Rob Lloyd, president of Development and Sales at Cisco.
The service delivery platform and satellite network router are scheduled for service introduction in 2014.

What can I say? I was wrong. But wait until the end of the year and the new fleet version shloud be just the ticket. If nothing else it shloud give ocean rowers some options.
