BAE Wins $2B for UK Nuclear Sub

BAE Systems has won a $1.93 billion contract to design and manufacture a nuclear-powered submarine for the British navy, Reuters reports.

The HMS Audacious submarine is the fourth out of seven nuclear-powered submarines for the navy, according to the report.

The Ministry of Defence has also committed $2.41 billion to the remaining three boats in the class.

According to The Independent newspaper, the class’ first two submarines — Astute and Ambush — are currently undergoing sea trials to test systems.

Artful, the third submarine, is in final stages of construction, the newspaper reports.

Each submarine is armed with Tomahawk missiles and Spearfish torpedoes, with the missiles having a target range of up to 1,200 miles, according to The Independent.
