EMC and VMware expect the new entity to compete in the cloud service market, InfoWorld reported Monday.
Maritz said in a letter to employees that Pivotal is aiming help customers build new applications through cloud independence, David Marshall writes.
Pivotal intends to package its cloud computing software so that users can use it with other similar platforms such as Amazon EC2.
The company says it will make its data management products available for use in various other cloud settings.
Pivotal will operate independently, with its own board of directors, executive team and staff members, Marshall writes.
