Paul Tiao, a former senior cybersecurity counselor to FBI Director Robert Mueller, has joined law firm Hunton & Williams LLP as a partner in its privacy and data security practice group.
He will be based in the firm’s Washington office, Hunton & Williams said Wednesday.
Lisa Sotto, head of Hunton & Williams’ global privacy and data security practice and New York office managing partner, said Tiao will work with clients to help protect their systems, personal information and trade secrets.
In his previous position, Tiao counseled Mueller on cyber-related issues such as intellectual property crime, electronic surveillance and digital forensics.
Tiao also developed policies, produced drafts for legislative language, coordinated strategy on national security and criminal issues and also represented the bureau in meetings with industry leaders, Congress and the executive branch.
Prior to the FBI, he served on the staff of the Senate Judiciary Committee, including time as counsel to Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin.
He has also served as a federal prosecutor in Maryland.
