John Olson, Ph.D., a 25-year federal government and aerospace veteran, has been appointed vice president of space systems at Sierra Nevada Corp.
He will work to oversee development initiatives, international affairs and government dealings for a commercial space project the company is working on for NASA, SNC said Monday.
SNC is one of three companies that receive funds under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which includes SNC’s Dream Chaser.
Olson most recently served as assistant director for space and aeronautics at the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy and oversaw interagency civil, commercial, and national security space and aeronautics policy.
Prior to the White House, Olson held several roles at NASA starting in 2004 and led two divisions in the agency’s human exploration and operations mission directorate.
Other assignments at NASA included director of the exploration systems mission directorate integration office, exploration transition manager and manager of International Space Station operations in the office of safety and mission assurance.
Olson also served in executive roles for the U.S. Air Force, most recently as chief of the space Test, operations and programs division at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M.
