A U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command group has ordered systems and radiosondes from QinetiQ North America for special operations weather teams.
QNA designed the Tactical Atmospheric Sounding Kit to measure and broadcast wind speed, wind direction, pressure, temperature and humidity as it elevates to altitudes of up to 45,000 feet on a small weather balloon, QNA said Monday.
The company also built TASK to be launched within five minutes.
“In many special operations missions, you only get one chance for success and atmospheric conditions can make a big difference in go/no go decisions,” said Andrew Rogers, QNA EVP and general manager of technology solutions.
TASK is intended as a man portable, self-contained system that requires no specialized equipment, the company says.
