AirTrafficControlNASAUnited Airlines has pledged to use digital avionics equipment as part of the Federal Aviation Administration‘s air traffic modernization initiative, for which Harris Corp. serves as the prime contractor.

The goal of the FAA’s NextGen Data Communications Integrated Services program is to integrate data and voice messaging communications between air traffic controllers and pilots, Harris said Monday.

Howard Attarian, United senior vice president of flight operations, said the FAA aims to help the aviation sector increase air traffic efficiency and reduce carbon footprint through NextGen.

United intends to equip its airplanes with pilot-to-controller avionic systems over the next six years, Harris says.

Harris launched an FAA-backed outreach effort to help airlines install digital communications equipment through NextGen.
