Serena Saitto and David Welch write Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet verified the acquisition but didn’t comment on Apple’s plans for PrimeSense’s technology.
“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” Huguet said in a phone interview with Bloomberg.
Bloomberg reports PrimeSense’s main offering is designed to help electronic devices spot motion and objects and then adds depth and color to the items.
The technology is intended for mobile gaming, 3D shopping catalogs and indoor navigation, Saitto and Welch write.
Microsoft used the Tel Aviv-based company’s technology for the Kinect game console, according to the report.
Apple has purchased other technology businesses this year including transit navigation provider HopStop.com; navigation software firm Embark; WifiSLAM for a platform meant to identify location indoors; and Locationary for business location maps, the report said.
