ATK‘s composite and propulsion technologies were used to help launch the Lockheed Martin-built Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN spacecraft into space on Monday.
The company developed the 10-foot diameter composite heat shield and the 401 vehicle configuration with a 4-meter fairing used in the launch vehicle, ATK said Monday.
The United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V launch vehicle lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, representing the 41st Atlas V launch ATK has provided composite structures for.
This is also the sixth flight to use ATK’s retro motors, the company said.
Similar ATK hardware was also used in the launch of the Advanced Extremely High Frequency 3 satellite in September.
