Noel Randewich writes Intel launched two new processors for mobile devices built based on the Atom technology, with a high-end model called Broxton scheduled for release in 2015.
The company also unveiled SoFIA, the low-end model processor, which CEO Brian Krzanich says will be initially built outside of Intel before moving production to the company’s 14-nanometer manufacturing lines later.
Krzanich told analysts the number of tablet computers with Intel processors could quadruple in 2014, according to the report.
Chief Financial Officer Stacy Smith told Reuters Intel plans to reduce its investments in PC processors and shift focus to mobile chip technologies in an effort to respond to customers’ preference for tablets.
Randewich writes the company plans to market SoFIA chips in 2014.
