Northrop Grumman has won a $20.4 million contract to build three radar systems for the U.S. Navy’s amphibious and Arleigh Burke-class ships.
The AN/SPQ-9B radars are intended for the LPD-27, LHA-7, DDG-79 and the upcoming Flight III DDG-51 guided missile destroyer, Northrop Grumman said Monday.
“This is a significant step for Northrop Grumman because it leads the way for a potential of more than 60 DDG-51 radar backfits as well 16 forward fits on the next Flight III destroyers,” said Bill Hannon, vice president of Northrop’s maritime systems business unit.
Each radar system will be integrated with fire control systems that work to help Navy sailors detect and counter surface-skimming missile threats.
Those radars complement 53 other radar systems that Northrop has delivered to the Navy.
