NavyShipLockheed Martin has awarded L-3 Communication Systems-East a contract of an undisclosed value to design a communications subsystem for deployment onboard Canada’s arctic and offshore patrol ships.

L-3 CS-East will provide automated components for maritime communications equipment under the Canadian navy’s AOPS project, for which Lockheed is a supplier, L-3 said Wednesday.

“The interior and exterior communications subsystem is critical to the operation of AOPS, allowing seamless communications from the rugged environment of Canada’s far northern waters to the busy coastal regions,” said Peter Gartenburg, a vice president at L-3 Canada.

Irving Shipbuilding Inc. is constructing the first surveillance vessel under the program and delivery is scheduled for 2018.

The Canadian military seeks to procure between six and eight ships for navigating through ice water and defending its sovereignty in the Arctic, L-3 says.
