Gwendolyn Boyd, a three-decade Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory veteran, has been appointed president of the Alabama State University after serving as executive assistant to the chief of staff of the university since 2011, The Hub reported Monday.

Boyd was also the chair of the John Hopkins University diversity leadership council since 2011, the university’s newspaper reported.

She holds a math degree from Alabama State and became the first black woman to earn a mechanical engineering degree from Yale in 1979.

The Hub reports that Caroline Laguerre-Brown, JHU vice provost for institutional equity, will serve as interim chair of the university’s diversity leadership council through the end of the current academic year.
