Jane Whitfield has been appointed president and CEO of the Pentagon Federal Credit Union Foundation, becoming the first female to head the charity group following a nationwide search.

She holds more than two decades of experience in nonprofit work following a career in sales and marketing, the foundation said Wednesday.

Whitfield will start her new position at PenFed on March 3 and succeed the retiring Christopher Flynn.

“Her decades of work in philanthropy combined with her personal experiences give her a unique perspective on how the PenFed Foundation can grow and flourish,” said Col. (Ret) Bill Siegert, board chairman of the PenFed Foundation.

Whitfield founded her own consulting firm in 2008 to help develop leaders, raise funds and plan programs in partnership with foundations, philanthropists and nonprofits.

She also held senior leadership roles at UC Berkeley School of Law, Graduate Theological Union and Bay Area Legal Aid.
