Rugged military DisplayRockwell Collins and Sandia National Laboratories’ alliance will work with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to integrate nanoscale architectures into military communication systems.

The company said Tuesday the goal of DARPA’s Mesodynamic Architectures program is to develop a mesoscale method for building smaller technology for communication, electronic warfare and networking applications.

“Once this is developed, Rockwell Collins can transition this new technology into capabilities that will aid the warfighter while meeting the Department of Defense’s goals of reducing the size, weight, power and cost of communication equipment,” said John Borghese, vice president of the Rockwell Collins Advanced Technology Center.

The team has demonstrated a radio frequency filtering technique in materials that are approximately 10,000 times smaller than components in use today, according to Rockwell Collins

DARPA also seeks to apply ultra-small optical waveguides or optical fibers to secure future intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance platforms.
