northrop-Grumman_BLUENorthrop Grumman has received a $12 million task order from the U.S. Navy to support the Combat Direction Systems Activity at Dam Neck in upgrading the Ship Self-Defense System Mark 2 combat system.

The company said Tuesday it will develop new hardware prototypes to replace old components and provide systems engineering and integration as well as lifecycle engineering services.

“It’s important we continue migrating toward (commercial off-the-shelf) equipment to improve performance and enable increased cybersecurity,” said Mike Barrett, director of maritime combat systems at Northrop Grumman Information Systems.

Northrop received the award through the SeaPort-e contract vehicle as part of a five-year, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract potentially worth $61 million.

SSDS MK2 is an air defense system designed for aircraft carriers and amphibious vessels and features sensor technology and self-defense weapons.

Northrop said it has provided engineering support to CDSA for other naval combat systems in the past decade.
