Lockheed Martin and the University of Alabama have partnered to establish a data science center that will offer analytics research services to other organizations.

The lab will be built to provide a collaborative data analytics environment for government, commercial and academic organizations and work to help them solve complex operational issues, UA said Monday.

Dr. Ray O. Johnson, Lockheed senior vice president and chief technology officer, signed the partnership agreement with UA President Judy Bonner.

“We are using data analytics today at Lockheed Martin to study nuances in cost, schedule and performance data from across our nearly 4,000 programs and throughout our supply chain,” Johnson said.

“Applying machine learning algorithms, for example, to real program data can help provide early warning to identify and eliminate risks before even an expert program manager may have discovered them,” he added.

Lockheed and UA also seek to develop new analytics tools as well as boost data science talent pool through the center.
