FireEye has released a new report that indicates the rate of malware attacks has grown nearly twice in the first half of 2014.

The report examines the activity and targets of different malware threats across Europe, Middle East and Africa during the first six months of 2014, FireEye said Thursday.

“Advanced attacks are the new reality for business and government,” said Richard Turner, vice president for EMEA at FireEye.

“By preparing an effective defensive strategy, organisations can avoid the risk of sitting on the sidelines as their data and intellectual property find their way to competitors, adversaries or hacktivists,” Turner added.

The U.K. and Germany topped the list of targeted countries and the government, financial services, telecommunications and energy were the most targeted verticals.
