Mitre-logoCarson Zimmerman, principal cybersecurity engineer at MITRE Corp., has outlined strategies to bolster computer network defense across the government, industry, academia and nonprofit sector in his new book.

The book, entitled Ten Strategies of a World-Class Cybersecurity Operations Center, contains best practices based on lessons learned from MITRE’s previous projects with U.S. military and civilian clients, MITRE said Wednesday.

Zimmerman also factors in technology, people and process issues for a “network defense to be effective.”

“Most CSOCs are set up and operate with a focus on technology, without adequately addressing people and process issues, which often get in the way of successful network defense,” said Zimmerman.

“The main premise of this book is that a more balanced approach would be more effective,” he added.

Zimmerman proposes ways to determine the right cybersecurity center size and structure, obtain placement within an organization, develop human resource for cyber operations, maintain preparedness against threats, build data collection and analysis architecture and schedule data feeds across an enterprise.
