Lockheed Martin BlueLockheed Martin is developing a small reactor the company believes has potential to generate power through nuclear fusion, Reuters reported Wednesday.

Andrea Shalal writes Tom McGuire, a program lead at Lockheed’s Skunk Works unit, said the organization seeks to attract government, academic and commercial partners for its compact fusion reactor project.

Skunk Works conducted a study to demonstrate the feasibility of constructing a 100-megawatt reactor that is 10 times smaller than the size of existing reactors, according to Reuters.

The company believes nuclear fusion-based power technology could serve as a means to address energy generation issues and climate change.

“We can make a big difference on the energy front,” McGuire was quoted as saying.

Lockheed’s fusion reactor is designed to utilize deuterium-tritium fuel and reduce nuclear waste, Shalal writes.
