BoeingLogo1 EbizBoeing is planning to utilize systems engineering controls from military space programs for its $41 billion Ground-based Midcourse Defense system in response to reviews on the design’s reliability, Reuters reported Tuesday.

Andrea Shalal writes that the company is coordinating with Missile Defense Agency Director Vice Adm. James Syring to revamp GMD by adopting a “space program” approach.

“There’s a higher design reliability in space than there historically has been in some weapons programs,” said Craig Cooning, president of Boeing’s network and space systems business.

Cooning told Reuters in an interview that the new approach will include screening procedures enforced in space programs and new technology capabilities.

The report said GMD completed missile intercept tests in June.
