IEEEGreg Shannon, CERT Division chief scientist at Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute, will lead the IEEE Cybersecurity Initiative as chairman.

Shannon will work to develop resources for computer security education, guide software coding and further cybersecurity adoption across the industry, IEEE said Monday.

“With IEEE’s ubiquitous impact on cyber technologies, I’m delighted to chair this initiative and harness IEEE’s experience, technical leadership and resources to address society’s pervasive cybersecurity and privacy challenges,” said Shannon.

At CERT, Shannon develops methods and technologies to combat cyber threats in collaboration with government, industry and academia partners.

Shannon also previously served as general chair for the 35th IEEE security and privacy symposium.

He also held leadership roles in the various cybersecurity and data analysis programs of Lucent Technologies, Lumeta, Ascend Communications, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Indiana University.
