The worldwide biometrics industry is projected to have a market value of $16.7 billion by 2019, an increase from the $5.2 billion recorded in 2012, Radiant Insights said Wednesday.

Biometric platforms work to automatically identify people through their physiological or behavioral traits, and government agencies globally use the technology for citizen protection initiatives

Key industry players include IBM, Motorola Solutions, Iris ID Systems, Morpho and NEC.

The market research firm also predicts biometric programs in Russia, India and Mexico will help drive global market through 2019.
