The new joint venture between DigitalGlobe and Saab seeks to accelerate the companies’ existing work toward delivering a 3-D model of Earth using their combined technologies and partner on distribution efforts, Reuters reported Tuesday.

Andrea Shalal writes that the Vricon joint venture will integrate 3-D computer processing and satellite imaging technologies in efforts to meet the needs of the defense, security and infrastructure sectors.

“We feel this is a multibillion-dollar opportunity,” Tony Frazier, senior vice president at DigitalGlobe, told Reuters.

He added that Vricon will work to build quicker and large-scale models using commercial satellite imagery to support sharing with other parties.

Shalal reports that the company could also bid on some work under the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency‘s program for publicly available material.

Vricon also works to expand Saab’s presence in the U.S. market alongside its work with Boeing on the U.S. Air Force training plane competition, the report said.
