GPS IIF satellite launchThe U.S. Air Force‘s latest Boeing-built Global Positioning System IIF satellite has completed its launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket.

The service said Wednesday the 10th GPS IIF satellite joins others in the Air Force Space Command-operated constellation that provides positioning and navigation services globally.

“[This] is a testament to the outstanding teamwork of government and industry partners’ commitment to mission success,” said Lt. Gen. Samuel Greaves, commander of AFSC’s Space and Missile Systems Center.NewAirForceLogo

Boeing also reports that the satellite has sent its first signals from orbit as it provides a boost to the Air Force’s efforts to modernize and enhance the capabilities of its navigation system.

The company said it will support GPS IIF-10 on-orbit checkout before the satellite becomes fully operational next month.
