Huntington-Logo_ExecutiveBizHuntington Ingalls Industries‘ Newport News Shipbuilding division has laid the keel for the future USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier at a ceremony in Newport News, Virginia.

Sponsored by former President Kennedy’s daughter Caroline Kennedy, the carrier will be the second ship of the Gerald R. Ford carrier class, HII said Saturday.

The carrier is designated CVN 79 and is the second U.S. Navy ship to be named after President Kennedy.

“While this aircraft carrier that we lay the keel for today will serve as a tangible legacy of our nation’s 35th President, so too will the people behind the steel,” said Matt Mulherin, Newport News Shipbuilding’s president.
