solar powerThe Energy Department has awarded Semprius a $2.9 million grant to develop photovoltaic solar modules through the use of small lenses and micro-solar cells.

Semprius said Thursday it will collaborate with the Naval Research Laboratory, University of Illinois, George Washington University and Veeco for the Micro-scale Optimized Solar-cell Arrays with Integrated Concentration program.

“We intend to drive down the cost of solar-generated electricity well below that of current solar- and fossil fuel-generated electricity,” said Scott Burroughs, executive vice president of manufacturing and technology development at Semprius.

Semprius will integrate concentrated PV cells and silicon cells into its standard CPV module.

Semprius will design the CPV cells to capture direct sunlight and the silicon cells to capture scattered light on cloudy days.
