Allen Middleton, formerly deputy director of the Defense Health Agency, has joined Booz Allen Hamilton as a thought leader and adviser for the company’s customers in the healthcare sector.

Booz Allen said Monday it hired Middleton as an independent consultant in July, four months after he retired from DHA to conclude a four-decade government career.

“As the health care system in the U.S. evolves from a traditional fee-for-service model to a more integrated outcome-based model based on patient risk assessment, all facets of the health care system must evolve as well,” said Andrea Inserra, Booz Allen senior vice president and head of the firm’s military health business.

“Al… is a recognized thought leader whose experience and expertise in all areas of health care delivery will help shape that transformation.”

Middleton is a former interim chief financial officer of the Tricare Management Activity and deputy assistant secretary of defense for health budgets and financial policy from 2010 to 2013.

He joined the Air Force Medical Service Corps in 1972 and held senior leadership positions, including hospital administrator at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota and assistant surgeon general for programs and policy.
