ManpackRadio1General Dynamics and its subcontractor Thales will provide more than 1,000 vehicle-mounted radio systems to the U.S. Army under a $20 million contract for two-channel tactical communications capability, Defense News reported Friday.

Jen Judson writes that the team will deliver 1,100 of Thales’ Vehicle Integrated Power Enhanced Rifleman radio systems to brigade combat teams deployed to austere locations.

The Army will also use the radios to support network integration evaluations at White Sands Missile Range and Fort Bliss, the report said.

Judson reports that VIPER utilizes the Soldier Radio Waveform, supports transitions between mounted and dismounted operations, and works to transmit voice and data and provide connectivity with the Nett Warrior device.
