Big Data, AppsBoeing has established an aerospace data analytics laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University as part of a new academic research initiative in which the company will invest $7.5 million over a three-year period.

Carnegie Mellon said Thursday the initiative aims to extract value out of data gathered from aircraft design, construction and operation.

Jaime Carbonell, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon and director of the Language Technologies Institute, and John Vu, a professor in language technologies and computational biology, will lead the research effort.

“We couldn’t be more excited to engage with and leverage the research power and incredible knowledge of a premiere academic institution,” said Nancy Bailey, vice president of Boeing’s information technology business partnership program.

The lab will make use of CMU’s systems to analyze written reports for evidence-based predictive maintenance and identify database patterns.
