Lockheed Martin BlueLockheed Martin has handed over the first updated PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement interceptors to the U.S. Army.

The company said Tuesday it installed new support systems, larger solid-rocket motors and control fins on the PAC-3 MSE interceptor that works to counter threats from aircraft, cruise and tactical ballistic missiles.

“As enemy threats grow in number and complexity, these interceptors will be critical to protecting soldiers, citizens and infrastructure around the globe,” said Scott Arnold, vice president of PAC-3 programs at Lockheed’s missiles and fire control segment.

Lockheed secured a follow-on order from the service branch for the missile interceptors in July after the initial production contract award in April 2014.
