Big Data, AppsThe National Science Foundation has awarded $5 million in grants to seven universities to set up four regional hubs that will work to advance big data developments, Fedscoop reported Monday.

Billy Mitchell writes the regional “big data brain trusts” will work to support programs across the country that seek to facilitate big data collection and establish a collaborative structure toward greater use in the transportation, health, energy, smart cities and public safety arenas.

The University of North Carolina will work to establish the South Hub with Georgia Tech, while Columbia University will lead the establishment of the Northeast Hub, Mitchell reports.

The University of Illinois will create the Midwest Hub and the West Hub will be a collaborative effort of the University of California in San Diego, University of Washington and the University of California in Berkeley.
