networkJuniper Networks will collaborate with two information technology companies to integrate a new networking switch into the U.S. Air Force‘s data transport system.

Affigent and ThunderCat Technology chose Juniper as an original equipment manufacturer to help build an open networking architecture under the Air Force’s Base Information Transport Infrastructure modernization project, Juniper said Monday.

Bob Fortna, vice president of Juniper’s federal defense unit, said he believes adoption of open and interoperable technology can offer advantages to the military branch in the long run.

BITI will employ open networking standards intended to address data, voice and imagery bandwidth needs of the Air Force, Juniper noted.

Juniper’s switching technology will be installed at 44 Air Force bases in order to support troops’ wired and wireless communications.

The military branch expects the installation to complete by September.
