General Dynamics and Huntington Ingalls Industries have received additional funds from the U.S. Navy to help build two more Arleigh Burke-class missile guided destroyers, USNI News reported Wednesday.
Megan Eckstein writes the obligated funds are for the seventh and eighth DDG 51 ships under two separate contracts the military service awarded to General Dynamics unit Bath Iron Works and HII division Ingalls Shipbuilding in 2013.
The vessels will be built with a Flight IIA configuration and will incorporate modern sensor and weapon systems, Eckstein reports.
DoD Buzz’ Hope Hodge Seck reported the Navy could potentially buy up to 10 ships under its multi-year contracts with Bath Iron Works and Ingalls Shipbuilding.
Defense Department budget documents obtained by DoD Buzz state that the military service aims to invest as much as $107 billion to procure 86 DDG 51 destroyers.
