UAVU.S. Army Col. Phil Cheatham has said he believes the development of a nano-unmanned aerial system could be a “game changer” for military reconnaissance missions at the squad level, the Army News Service reported Thursday.

David Vergun writes Cheatham told a media roundtable held March 22 the military branch seeks miniaturized UAS technology with a day-and-night camera system and that can demonstrate up to 90 percent probability of target detection.

The Army on March 1 issued a request for information to gather ideas from industry on how to build a less than 150-gram aerial vehicle as part of its Soldier Borne Sensor initiative.

Lt. Col. Timothy Fuller, the Army’s SBS assistant product manager, said the Army will hold an industry day on April 12 and could start to procure nano-unmanned aircraft next year.
