ThalesThales Group‘s Canada-based subsidiary has partnered teamed up with the Ontario government to develop a new railway signalling system for the province to address transit safety concerns and potentially create new jobs.

Thales in Canada and Ontario will work to integrate a new communication-based train control system for mass transit including subways, light rail and commuter rail systems, the company said Wednesday.

Ontario will invest $12 million into the project through its Jobs and Prosperity Fund and the Thales subsidiary will contribute $80 million for what the company calls the province’s largest public infrastructure investment in the province’s history.

The team’s plan also includes goals for talent and skills investment, job creation through college and university education expansion and secure retirement for Ontario natives.

Thales added the company’s urban rail signalling system carries nearly 3 billion passengers per year and is used in 40 cities such as London, New York, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Dubai.
