Mike Petters, president and CEO of Huntington Ingalls Industries, has said HII has secured approximately 20 percent of shipbuilding work on the U.S. Navy’s entire Ohio-class replacement program with General Dynamics as prime contractor.

He told Defense News reporter Christoper Cavas in an interview published Sunday that ORP prompts HII to align its design plans as well as its capital investment.

Petters noted that the service branch will rely on HII to deliver more Virginia-class submarines as General Dynamics works on Ohio-class submarines in order to “make sure the workload stays balanced.”

“How all of that plays out has a lot to do with how many ships the Navy buys at any particular time,” he added.

Petters said the company is scheduled to deliver the Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) aircraft carrier to the Navy in 2016 and that it will subject the ship’s flight deck to months of tests following delivery.
