clean energyRaytheon, NATS, SSE and Vattenfall have implemented a new system designed to help mitigate the impact of wind turbines on radar performance at the Great Dun Fell and Lowther Hill radar sites.

Air Traffic Management reported Thursday the R&D coalition developed Project RM to address interference caused by turbines that appear as “clutter” on radar screens and will work to help development of new systems.

” … we are now working with Raytheon to understand how we might further optimise the radars to increase the benefits being achieved so that we can reach the 1.1GW that was originally estimated,” said Andy Sage, NATS information director.

The report added NATS also investigates the use of “other mitigation technologies” to address the turbine interference issues that disrupt the release of renewable energy.
