DHS - ExecutiveMosaicTDA Research has received $980,531 in funds from the Department of Homeland Security‘s science and technology directorate to develop a respiration system for firefighters to protect themselves against chemical vapors and hazards on overhaul missions.

DHS said Friday that the company will create a lightweight filtration system that will support work to support firefighters during overhaul efforts with respiratory protection against hazardous materials.

Bill Deso, program manager for DHS S&T’s first responders group, said the department aims to give firefighters what he called a “comfortable alternative” to the firefighters’ self-contained breathing apparatus.

DHS’ first responders group requested for the project in fall 2015 and says it will award related contracts in the “coming weeks and months.”
