AirplaneInmarsat has cleared a hardware package Honeywell developed to help aerospace customers use in-flight internet service through Inmarsat’s Global Xpress satellite network.

Honeywell said Tuesday its JetWave platform will work to help aircraft crew, passengers and maintenance personnel connect to the GX Aviation broadband service.

Carl Esposito, vice president of marketing and product management at Honeywell’s aerospace segment, noted the company found during a study that 84 percent of travelers surveyed consider Wi-Fi as an important connectivity tool during flights.

“Inmarsat’s certification of our JetWave hardware means that customers don’t have to wait for a high-speed, global connectivity service,” Esposito added.

“It’s available and ready for installation now.”

The Federal Aviation Administration and its European counterpart have also certified JetWave as compliant with safety, environmental and installation standards, according to Honeywell.

Honeywell added there are currently three Inmarsat GX satellites in orbit.
