Gerald Ford aircraft carrierLockheed Martin has won a four-year, $38.6 million contract design and produce technical insertion hardware for the self-defense systems installed aboard various aircraft carriers and amphibious ships of the U.S. Navy.

The Defense Department said Friday that Lockheed will perform SSDS hardware updates in an effort to increase the performance and sustainability of the weapons equipment.

DoD added the Technical Insertion 2016 initiative seeks to introduce high-level electronics component commonality with the Navy’s Aegis Combat System as well as modernize  computer processing, networking, and data storage platforms intended to help the service branch address integrated combat system requirements.

Lockheed is scheduled to complete the work in August 2020.

The Naval Surface Warfare Center-Dahlgren Division received three proposals for the contract via a competitive solicitation process on FedBizOpps and will obligate $969,095 in fiscal 2016 Navy “other” procurement funds at the time of award.
