ReaperA General Atomics subsidiary has secured a $9.6 million contract from the Missile Defense Agency to design, build and test precision tracking laser subsystems for the MQ-9 Reaper remotely piloted aircraft.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. will work to develop and demonstrate a flight representative laser technology with beam train optics needed to update the drone’s multispectral targeting system into an active tracking sensor, the Defense Department said Friday.

DoD expects GA-ASI to complete work by Sept. 30, 2017.

The Missile Defense Agency awarded the cost-plus-fixed-fee contract after a competitive solicitation on the FedBizOpps website under MDA’s Advanced Technology Innovation broad agency announcement.

MDA obligated $3.2 million at the time of award from its research, development, test and evaluation funds in fiscal year 2016.
