satellite airforceThe European Maritime Safety Agency has awarded the team of ORBCOMM and LuxSpace Sarl a potential four-year, $11.4 million contract to provide satellite-based automatic identification system data services.

LuxSpace and ORBCOMM will work to provide global satellite AIS data feed to EMSA, other European Union agencies and member states to help them track ships as well as perform security and navigational operations, ORBCOMM said Monday.

EMSA awarded the contract through a competitive procurement process.

ORBCOMM operates two LuxSpace-built AIS-based VesselSat 1 and VesselSat 2 satellites to provide data services to clients worldwide through a contract with LuxSpace.

LuxSpace has begun development work on an AIS microsatellite based on its Triton-2 platform under a contract with the European Space Agency.

Rochelle Park, New Jersey-based ORBCOMM provides machine-to-machine communication platforms and AIS data services for government and commercial clients.

Luxembourg-based LuxSpace Sarl is an affiliate of Germany-based space systems manufacturer OHB SE and develops microsatellites, communication subsystems for geostationary satellites and satellite simulator software platforms.
