researchICF has tested Charles River Analytics‘ new semantic-based search tool designed to help U.S. Army intelligent tutoring system authors to search for existing training reference materials.

Charles River said Tuesday ICF conducted a double-blind evaluation of the Content Retrieval and Extraction for Advanced Tutoring Environments in comparison with traditional keyword searching techniques.

Instruction system designers who used the system to search for relevant content on Army battlefield radios have reported that they found more search results within a fixed time period.

Terry Patten, Charles River’s principal investigator for the project, said the evaluation sought to determine how CREATE can support authoring intelligent tutoring systems and provide the company feedback for future updates.

CREATE supports intelligent tutoring system authors such as those under the Army’s Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring to build weapons, equipment and procedure training systems for the military branch.

The platform was developed to promote the deployment of the systems across the Army, added Patten.
